Headboard Reveal

We’ve had our headboard for a little while now but I haven’t shared it on the blog until now because the bedroom is still a work in progress (almost done and will post the end result soon). I always debate on sharing projects before they are completely done but I couldn’t resist… I’ve included a few snapshots of the headboard a below. I’m really happy at how the it turned out – we wanted something white to contrast with our stripes. My favourite is the detailing along the edges. It’s nice to see how it went from a pile of fabric to the end result. And here it is….

A console table for the living room?

The other day I got to thinking about adding layers to our living room. There is still some space to fill but we’ve been waiting to find the right pieces. I was thought that maybe adding a console table would be a fit table so I took a peek online to see what I’d find.

To start, this is the corner/wall I’m thinking of:

The table would go behind the chair and provide a nice place for display, a little storage and another layer of decor. It’s funny, I always see great console tables on other blogs and in magazines but when I went looking I didn’t find a huge list of ones I loved. I’ve included two options below – my favorite is the first one. What do you think?

Foto Friday – West Elm Ryder Chair

Lately I’ve noticed some new West Elm chairs and I’ve fallen in love with the light grey material on this one. It doesn’t quite fit into our living room decor right now but maybe I’ll find a place for it at some point. Have you come across anything that you love but doesn’t quite fit in your place? This happens to me all of the time…

Foto Friday – Black Brick Tile

I was watching Urban Suburban this week and one of the homes they checked out had a pretty amazing shower done in black brick tile. I loved it so immediately went online to see if I could find something similar to share. I didn’t find something exactly like what I saw (the shower was modern more than traditional) but here are a couple things that have come close:

I think it can look pretty stunning! I’m not in the market for tile but if I was I might just consider it. What do you think, is black tile too dark? What about the brick style? I think it might be permanently on my love list.

Out with the old and in with the new

Hello! Happy New Year! After taking a little bit of time off in December to catch up from a crazy busy fall/beginning of winter, it is back to the blog.

Since it is the beginning of the year I thought it would be fun to revisit last year’s wish list of projects. To be honest, I was a bit nervous to look back at the list but in the end I think we did ok!

Here is a list of 2011 projects and a run down of where we’re at :

- Figuring out our nook: The plan was to add some extra storage with more of a mud room feel. That is still the plan! We narrowed down our choices and are almost 100% sure on what we’re going to do (ideas here) but we have to figure out what to do with the window coverings. The room has windows on three sides but we need to be able to “close the curtains” for some privacy. The other reason why we’ve waited is because I want to make sure we can take on the project as a whole instead of bit by bit.

- Finishing our bedroom: We’re pretty much done! Last year’s list includes:curtains, bedside tables, bedding, lighting, headboard, and mirror… Good news is we have everything done and the bedside tables need one more coat of paint. Bad news, I haven’t taken any photos to share. Stay tuned this month for all the details!

- TV Room: We were looking for a TV bench that is nice looking and functional. Done! Photos coming soon! (fyi blog resolution is to take photos of projects and share as they are done!)

- Framing projects – We added a series of prints in the living room, framed some art in the dining room and our bedroom. We’re going to continue to add layers and art as we find and fall in love with it.

Not bad for a start, now the fun begins and we an start to think about this year! I think the plan is to be more specific about some of our projects and add some layers to our existing space. More on 2012 projects next week!

One of A Kind Show

Last Thursday I had the chance to preview the Christmas One-of-a-Kind show here in Toronto. I love this show and it is a great place to discover new things and it is great for gifts. Below are a few of the booths that stood out to me this year. I didn’t have nearly enough time so I’m planning on going back before it ends next week. I heart this Dwell Studio coffee table

We’re in between projects over here right now. It’s been a busy time for us with day job work and the holidays are almost here – so we’ve been taking a bit of a break. I’m starting to get more into scouting ideas for projects for the New Year. There are tons we want to get done, some painting (living, dining, hallway, stairway), finally start our diy bench for our nook and a couple of other things. We’re in no rush for anything but its fun to think of the possibilities.

One item that totally wasn’t on our list of immediate things we need and that I’ve fallen in love with is this Dwell Studio coffee table. How great would it be for entertaining with that extra space?! I think I might need to check it out in store some time soon…

Designing with Light

I know that lighting is important when designing a space but since I’m not a designer I’m no expert on a how to use lighting to enhance the decor of a space. Luckily, a couple of weeks ago I had the chance to learn a little bit more about how to use lighting from HGTV host and designer Samantha Pynn and Phillips.

Here are a few tips that I learned:

You should use multiple light sources in a room and make sure they have dimmers so you can create different looks
Place your lights at different heights
Use different kinds of fixtures (pendants, recessed, sconces, table, floor, and desk lamps) a good mix will have more of an effect

All of this sounds like common sense but sometimes you just need someone to point it out. I realized I don’t nearly have enough light sources in most of my space! I’m looking forward to adding some new lighting pieces to the mix. You can check out this great example of what to do by checking out the space Sam Pynn designed for the event.

Pretty fab looking set-up right? And, can you believe that all the lights are LED? That means they are super energy efficient and last for ages – so you don’t need to worry about switching them too often. I want the floor lamp on the far left….

Too early for Christmas ornaments?

Hello! It’s been a bit quiet on the blog but I’m back to regular posts this week. And I’m getting in the mood for the holidays! I know it is early but how can you avoid it with all the fabulous Christmas decor hitting the shops? When it comes to holiday decor I’m into a mix of the traditional and modern. Urban Barn sent over a preview of their holiday gifts and I loved these modern ornaments. In classic gold, silver and cream they have a touch of the traditional with a modern look. Happy Halloween!

We had a pumpkin carving party tonight with some friends. It’s always fun to get together to do fun holiday things. I did try making the cute little owl pumpkin that I mentioned earlier this week. I think it turned out ok! Here are some snapshots of all EIGHT pumpkins we carved:
