Nursery inspiration for the newest little HomeSlice

April 4, 2012

The last few months I’ve been obsessing about a new home project…the nursery!!! We are super excited for our first baby to arrive in early July!  In all of the excitement I’ve become obsessed with everything nursery and baby – paint colours, sheets, art, toys, chairs…you name it!  The plan is to share our adventure on how we decorate the baby’s room on the blog – it’s fun because the room is a blank canvas.

Here are a couple of baby rooms I love and that have become a bit of an inspiration as we figure out our new little one’s space.

Any suggestions on baby nursery must haves as we start to plan?

Hop to it! Easter Egg Ideas

April 2, 2012

Easter is just around the corner and I’ve been looking for new ideas for painting eggs (Hello Pinterest!).  Eggs are a big part of my family Easter tradition -it’s not just painting them but the games we play with the eggs.  Games? No, these aren’t your typical Easter egg hunt – we play some traditional Lithuanian games that involve rolling, smashing and then of course eating the eggs.

The last couple years I’ve been in charge of “making the eggs” and I’ve gone the traditional route dying with onion skins and the not so traditional out of the box crazy effects eggs.  This year I’m looking for something in between.

Here are a couple of thoughts:

Do you have any Easter traditions?  Big plans for any Easter DIY?

Mirror Revamp

March 26, 2012

A couple of months ago I posted about this fabulous frame and how I wanted to make it into a mirror for our bedroom.  There were a few steps to making this happen.  First, I had to get rid of the existing needlepoint (which wasn’t as easy as it seems since it was glued and nailed in).  Then I had a mirror cut and installed at Gerrard Glass and Mirror.  The team there was great and it was really affordable.  Then it was time to paint.  We primed with a tinted primer and then painted using a metallic silver paint from Benjamin Moore.

Here are a couple of photos of the step-by-step and the end result!!

I am super happy with how it turned out and how this little DIY project makes me smile as I get ready in the mornings. And you can see a sneak peak of our bedroom curtains!!  Will share those soon!

Foto Friday – A pint o’ Guinness

March 16, 2012

Typically St. Patrick’s Day is all about green decor, green food and green beer.  Rather than focus on green for St. Patrick’s Day, this year I thought it would be fun to focus on something different but equally as traditional –  Guinness!  This beer happens to be a favorite around our house year round and there are some super cute recipes that would be great for a St. Patrick’s Day celebration.  I didn’t mean to make this post about sweets and treats but how can you resist when you see these photos?  The pudding is super cute…  Now I just have to decide what I’m making for tomorrow – thoughts?

HomeSlice Finds: Urban Outfitters Vintage Floor Lamp

March 14, 2012

I’ve been looking for floor lamps and this Vintage Floor Lamp form Urban Outfitters has totally caught my eye.  It comes in a few great colours and a vintage looking brass.  Oh, and the best part – it is $119.  The worst part, it only ships to the U.S.

Check it out!

Now here’s hoping that I can get my hands on one in Canada!  Any tips on how to get Urban Outfitters items that only ship to the U.S. other than having it sent to a freight company?

Black-on-Black Wallpaper Reveal

March 12, 2012

Remember this post on how I found the perfect black-on-black wallpaper for our media room?  Here’s a quick refresher: We wanted to choose a black wallpaper so that our TV would blend into the wall, rather than stand out.  This is the end result:

{ theHomeSlice.ca }

We chose  Crown Wallpaper #17197.  It was a bit hard to photograph but the wall is stunning (at least I think so!).  You can see the pattern but it isn’t overwhelming.  I mean, a black accent wall is dramatic enough right?  The dark really balances out all the white in the basement.   As you can see from the reflection in the TV we’ve added a splash of colour from the bright pillows but the rest is either dark or light.  Would you add a black accent wall in your space?  Too much? Just enough drama?

HomeSlice Finds: Anthroplogie Winking Luce Vase

March 5, 2012

I often find little things that I think are super cute and want to share with you via the blog but sometimes I’m not sure if it is enough for a full post.  I can’t resist sharing, so I’ve decided to start a new mini-feature sharing these fun finds with you in a way that’s short and sweet.

My first “find” is this fabulous vase from Anthropologie.  Classic shape with a touch of colour and only $14 online.

I just might have to wander over to Anthropologie during lunch this week to see if they have it in store…
