Monte Joya Rocker – the HomeSlice Nursery Picks

Finding the right chair for our nursery has been a challenge.  To be completely honest, most chairs out there are ugly.  I’m all about choosing products for functionality but at the same time when your spending hours sitting in a chair/in the nursery it’s also nice to have something that fits with the design esthetic of the room.  Not only did we have the challenge of finding a chair that fits with the nursery decor but early on in our search we discovered that the doorway to the nursery is tiny and that most standard size chairs won’t fit through the doorway…

Our “wish list” for our nursery chair looked a little like this:

  • Modern design, customizable fabric, comfortable
  • Rocker (gliders made us both feel a bit sea sick)
  • Will fit through the door of the nursery
  • Made in a way that is environmentally responsible

I came across the Monte Joya Rocker at a local baby store and loved the look of the chair.  Based on our “wish list” it basically had everything that we were looking for!

I was interested in learning more about how the chair was made so I contacted Monte and set-up a tour of their showroom and production facility. Ralph, the founder of the company kindly gave me a tour of the showroom and showed me firsthand how all of their furniture is made (pretty neat eh?!).   (You can check out the process in this video here!)

I loved that the entire line of furniture is Canadian-made but what I didn’t know is that each piece is upholstered by the same person by hand – so no big machines or massive production line.  It also means that you get awesome quality and attention to detail.  The other thing that really resonated with me was that each chair is made to order, which means everything is completely customizable, so you can pick your style of chair, fabric, colours and then your chair is made specifically for you.

Other things I loved?

  • The design of the entire line-up is sleek and modern and doesn’t look like typical “nursery” furniture
  • The foam used to make the chairs is local and is made using natural products like soybean
  • All the wood used in production is FSC certified
  • There is lots of selection when it comes to colour combination and fabric choices so you can create a chair that matches any space

So you can probably guess that I ordered a Joya Rocker for our nursery.  It wasn’t supposed to arrive for another couple of weeks but when I called Monte and let them know that little Stella arrived an entire month early they were able to ship it to me in a couple of days (lifesaver!)  A full reveal of what fabric we chose for our rocker and how it looks in the space coming soon!  We need to finish a few little things in the nursery first.  Stay tuned…

A couple more photos from my visit to the Monte showroom below.  In addition to rockers and gliders they have some great bassinets, high chairs, kids furniture, etc.
